SURPRISE!

Side note: Was I the only kid who had trouble with spelling the word surprise? I think I failed that spelling test…and was scarred for life…so now I always spell it correctly.

We knew that once we got renovations started, we would find surprises along the way. HGTV did a good job of preparing us for that. It took a total of two days for us to get the courage (and masks from Ace Hardware!) to remove the suspicious blue rug in the back bedroom.

And there they were: Two terribly ugly, discolored stains on the otherwise beautiful hardwood floors underneath. GAH! It was the only rug/carpet left in the whole house-we knew they were hiding something!

Josh went at the stains with a mop, scrubbing for about thirty minutes and got some of the surrounding not completely sunk in yet grime, but overall-not a huge deal. We are planning on refinishing them at some point, but for now, an area rug will work. It definitely won’t be the blue rug – that thing went straight to the street for trash pickup next Monday.

We are thankful that our first surprise wasn’t anything super major! Phew.

On another note, Josh met with our first of three AC specialists to get quotes on an energy efficient system to replace the system that was installed in 1970 and can blow air but can’t blow COOL air. Not very efficient.  Isn’t she a beaut? I definitely won’t cry when she is taken away and replaced with a new one!

I am curious: What was your first surprise when you bought a house? Was it something major or something minor?

  1. Fried food/chicken junk from over 15 years of NEVER cleaning their kitchen stuck to the sides of our store when we pulled it away from the wall, GROSS!

  2. Hi Alison,

I’ve been following your renovation project as I complete my own; so far, I’ve learned that I might like your house better. 🙂

We had a bunch of “surprises” when we bought our place, including:
    1. Stains on the hardwood floor that were covered by rugs – including one that looks like it was caused by a fire.
    2. Holes in the walls that had been covered by furniture and paintings.
    3. Old-school Sanitest wallpaper that took 2 weeks to get down.
    4. A drop ceiling in the lower level that hid about 50 wires (some were contractor grade!) running over the Sheetrock.
    5. 15″ high grass and 3+ years of dead leaves covering thousands of dollars worth of lilies in the backyard (a more pleasant surprise than the others, I’ll admit).
    6. Mold in the downstairs bedroom from a storm 2 years ago.

I think what you two are doing in your place is nothing short of fantastic. I’ve loved reading your blog, and you’ve given me some great ideas for my own house! Keep up the good work, lady!

    Cheers,
    Dana

    1. Hi Dana! Thanks for reading! Your surprises are definitely scary- electrical problems and mold scare the CRAP out of me. The lilies sound awesome though-i am obsessed with lilies and wish we got enough sun to grow them in our yard! I totally hear ya on the leaves..we need to invest in an awesome leaf blower to address ours. We tried raking a few times but there is really no hope haha!!

      1. I’ve been gasping quite a bit. [grin] Actually, your consistent posts remind me that I need to update my own blog with our changes to the downstairs. Thanks for the reminder! Hee hee.
